Compare the2026 Volkswagen GTIVS 2026 Audi A5

Both the GTI and the A5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

There are over 2 times as many Volkswagen dealers as there are Audi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GTI’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Volkswagen vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. With 44 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Volkswagen higher than Audi.

As tested in Motor Trend the Volkswagen GTI is faster than the Audi A5:

On the EPA test cycle the GTI gets better fuel mileage than the A5 (24 city/32 hwy vs. 22 city/32 hwy).

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the GTI’s fuel efficiency. The A5 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Volkswagen GTI uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The A5 requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

The GTI stops much shorter than the A5:

The GTI’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the A5’s standard 45 series tires. The GTI Autobahn’s tires have a lower 35 series profile than the A5’s optional 40 series tires.

The GTI has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the A5; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

The GTI offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The A5’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The GTI handles at .96 G’s, while the A5 pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The GTI executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.4 seconds quicker than the A5 (25 seconds @ .74 average G’s vs. 26.4 seconds @ .69 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the GTI’s turning circle is 1.7 feet tighter than the A5’s (38 feet vs. 39.7 feet).

The Volkswagen GTI may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 800 to 900 pounds less than the Audi A5.

The GTI is 1 foot, 9.2 inches shorter than the A5, making the GTI easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The GTI’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The A5 has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the GTI has a standard rear wiper. The A5 doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The A5’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The GTI’s standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its January 2026 issue and they ranked the Volkswagen GTI Autobahn first. They ranked the Audi A5 Prestige third.

Motor Trend selected the GTI as their 2026 Car of the Year. The A5 has never been chosen.
